Senior Director of Dispute Resolution Service

Description:

This position will be responsible for managing and promoting the Dispute Resolution service while building key stakeholder relationships, ensuring excellence in case management, and building efficiency and capacity through the use of technology.

Key duties include case management, budgetcontrol, stakeholder relations, policy implementation, and providing expert guidance on legal matters related to the service and/or its cases.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Directs the administration of cases and resolves all issues that require the exercise of legal or ethical judgment. Works collaboratively with staff to ensure high quality administration of cases to the satisfaction of both parties and neutrals.

  • Proposes and appoints neutrals - reviewing the agreement to arbitrate and statement of claim; providing a fair and balanced panel of qualified neutrals; granting stays prior to appointment of a neutral or panel; and offering appointments to neutrals
  • Approves requests for deposits and payment of invoices.
  • Interfaces with IT to address technical issues regarding the Case Management System and to develop and implement updates and enhancements and new technology.
  • Leads the development and delivery of content for educational offerings on dispute resolution in partnership with the Education department.
  • Interfaces with the Dispute Resolution Review Board and serves as principal staff liaison for the Dispute Resolution Service Council. Recommends action and discussion items, responds to inquiries from Council members, and implements policies approved by the Council.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS
  • Law Degree required.
  • Ten years legal and management experience, preferably in a setting similar to the Dispute Resolution Service.
  • Experience in alternative dispute resolution and legal writing and editing strongly preferred.
  • Prior supervisory experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead project teams as well as participate as a member of teams.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills for effective interaction with Board members, CEO/EVP, and other staff and volunteers to achieve performance objectives.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and comfortable reaching out to AHLA members and others to persuade them of the wisdom of using the AHLA Dispute Resolution Service.
  • Attention to detail and capability to interpret and abide by sometimes complex rules of procedure.
  • Capable of balancing multiple tasks, making certain that priority tasks are completed on time.
  • Ability and patience to solve problems quickly, while simultaneously showing good judgment in order to satisfy all the parties involved in a case administered by Service.
  • Maintains confidentiality of dispute resolution matters.
  • Use of quality control techniques and attention to detail.
  • Collegial personality and work style that ensures that inter- and intradepartmental communication will be open and collaboration will be strong.
