This is a recruitment for a short-term/temporary position.
DEFINITION

Under general supervision of the assigned administrator, assist with the development and implementation of student success initiatives for the Student Success & Learning Resource Centers, including organizing the delivery of core student success and support services; performs duties related to data gathering and reporting, office management, student relations, or other specialized services and activities; collaborates with management, faculty and staff to support student success; assist with recruiting and training, short-term hourly employees, and perform other related duties as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The Student Success Specialist class perform a variety of tasks to guide and promote student success, including planning and facilitating workshops, learning activities, and other academic supportive services. The Student Success Specialist class is distinguished from other classes by the expertise regarding student success programs and initiatives with the ability to implement initiatives in a complex environment.
Incumbents in this position support the Guided Pathways framework, student learning outcomes and institutional effectiveness by providing assistance and direction to students, ensuring that they have access to academic and supportive services.

Essential Functions & Qualifications
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Recommend, implement, and monitor the procedures and process of the Student Success & Learning Resource Centers and ensure that all activity promotes a professional and student-centered learning environment;
  • Collaborate with the SSC Supervisors to develop and implement interventions that increase student success, based on research and best practices;
  • Perform various support tasks for student success and support programs;
  • Assess students' need for academic support and services;
  • Connect students to academic and supportive services through a case-management approach;
  • Monitor and track student tutoring training progress;
  • Coordinate and organize the work of student and short-term employees;
  • Provide coverage for Student Success & Learning Resource Centers facilities as needed;
  • Facilitate student success activities including but not limited to workshops, mid-term and final events;
  • Coordinate, schedule and monitor proctor exams;
  • Prepare reports, correspondence, agendas, and meeting minutes; design and create communication material;
  • Assist with promotion and outreach for student support and success programs;
  • Engage in appropriate professional development;
  • Follow and implement district policies and procedures;
  • Perform general clerical tasks such as typing, filing, organizing, and maintaining records; and
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Essential functions of particular positions within classifications may vary because job duties may vary by work location.
QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Required
  • Associate degree from an accredited institution.
Preferred
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish (oral and written).
Experience:

Preferred
  • 1 year experience in a student support position in a high school or community college setting
Or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge of:
  • Student success and retention strategies;
  • Outreach and marketing techniques;
  • Best practices for student success;
  • Current technologies, personal computer, and associated office software such as word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and/or database; and
  • Correct usage of English, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary;
Ability to:
  • Work with a minimum of supervision;
  • Implement techniques for providing academic and student support services to a diverse student population;
  • Work as a team member;
  • Exhibit superior interpersonal and problem-solving skills;
  • Be clearly student-focused in both philosophy and purpose;
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the performance of duties; and
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
Physical ability to:
  • Read and comprehend printed matter and text and data on computer monitors;
  • Communicate intelligibly and effectively via speech, telephone, written correspondence, and/or email;
  • Sit or stand for extended periods of time;
  • Lift and/or carry 25 pounds; and
  • Exert manual dexterity sufficient for keyboard and other office equipment operation.

This is a recruitment for a short-term/temporary position.
Work Schedule: M-Th, 8:30-5:00 pm, F 8-4:30 pm

Employees who work half-time or more are entitled to receive fringe benefits. The fringe allocation is money from the District to help cover the cost of insurance. Employees working half-time or more are eligible to participate in the District's medical, dental and vision insurance.

Employees with a work assignment of 50% to 74% of full time will receive one-half of the above stated fringe allocation.

If your insurance rate exceeds your fringe allocation, the balance will be deducted from your monthly payroll check. If the insurance plans selected cost less than the fringe allocation, any excess amount will be returned to the District. For more information about how fringe benefits are determined please refer to the collective bargaining agreement between SLO Community College District and Cuesta College Classified United Employees (CCCUE) or the Board of Trustees policy regarding management employees.
