JOB SUMMARY:
The Ranger Service Aide performs open space patrol and basic maintenance and vegetation management duties in accordance with the Ranger Service Division; encourages the safe and effective promotion, protection, and utilization of the City's trails and open space preserves.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:
Incumbents in this classification perform entry-level technical duties associated with the assessment and maintenance of the City's Open Space system.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
The Ranger Service Aide receives general supervision from the Ranger Service Supervisor and may receive daily guidance from Ranger Service Workers within a framework of standard policies and procedures.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks that may be found in positions of this class.)
* Patrols open space areas on foot and/or mountain bikes to ensure compliance with the City Open Space Ordinances including the safety of users, the control of vandalism, and preservation of the natural environment.
* Patrols and performs basic maintenance within City creeks and assigned riparian areas
* Notifies Ranger Service Workers of any issues or warnings regarding City Ordinances and Regulations; may contact City Law Enforcement to report illegal activity.
* Assists with trail construction and other trail projects.
* Performs assigned open space maintenance tasks such as trail rehabilitation, fence repair, and the closure of "bootleg" trails.
* Maintains a level of physical fitness necessary to perform the strenuous tasks associated with this position such as hiking, climbing, open space maintenance, and trail construction.
* Maintains open space properties and the wildland-urban interface to reduce fire hazards; recognizes and reports any type of wild land fire.
* Log work activities using various software including excel and GIS.
* Clears debris from the creek channel using hand tools and power tools.
* Works with contractors and/or labor crews when needed to break up/remove debris jams.
* Performs related duties similar to the above in scope and function as required.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of:
* Principles and practices of good patrol techniques for trails, open spaces, and creeks.
* Proper open space and trail maintenance procedures, techniques, and terminology.
* Creek hydrology and hydraulics; how a creek moves and flows to predict where energy from flowing water is going to hit or impact.
* Watershed functions, San Luis Obispo tributaries, and the watersheds within the City of San Luis Obispo, and surrounding greenbelt.
* Proper English usage, grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, and spelling.
* Safety procedures related to the work being performed.
* Techniques for providing a high level of customer service to the public, the community, and City staff
Ability to:
* Receive direction and carry out assigned tasks.
* Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public using principles of good customer service.
* Learn and effectively apply procedures and methods used in repair and maintenance of assigned equipment.
* Learn City Open Space Ordinances.
* Communicate tactfully, both written and orally, with staff and the public.
* Safely use and maintain small mechanical hand tools.
* Traverse uneven ground while visually scanning surroundings for needed flood control activities.
* Use sound independent judgment within established guidelines.
* Work with diverse populations and maintain an inclusive environment.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
* High School Diploma or G.E.D.
And
* One (1) year of experience in open space or related field.
Or
* An equivalent combination of education and experience.
POSSESSION AND MAINTENANCE OF:
* Completion of American Red Cross First Aid, CPR, and AED training within sixty days of hire.
