Supervising Engineer - Water Resources

Description:

The County of San Luis Obispo Public Works Department is offering a career opportunity for a Supervising Water Resources Engineer with flood control, watershed, and/or drainage management expertise, and project development and management experience.

The position involves leading engineers and technicians, working with key partners to implement flood management programs, particularly for the leveed portion of Arroyo Grande Creek, and other areas as assigned. Responsibilities include understanding flooding, drainage, water resource conditions; setting sustainability goals; identifying solutions; and facilitating their initial implementation.

The division also focuses on developing regional water supply resiliency strategies, projects, and promoting an integrated approach to watershed and groundwater management. The role requires collaborating with the Water Resources Division Manager and four other supervisors to ensure effective partnership in achieving sustainable water resources across the county.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Be service and action-oriented
  • Understand hydrology and hydraulics data collection, modeling, and analysis methodologies
  • Have experience with regional, watershed, and community-scale analysis, planning, and project development
  • Understand institutional, regulatory, and financial aspects of program and project implementation

Leadership, collaboration, and accountability are essential, as water management strategies require coordination with multiple stakeholders. Public speaking skills and understanding of hydrologic data collection and modeling software and hardware are also desirable.

Education and Experience

Candidates should have a combination of education, training, and experience, such as:

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field, plus seven years of relevant experience
  • OR possession of a valid California civil engineer, traffic engineer, land surveyor license, or similar, plus four years of relevant experience

A valid California driver's license is required and must be maintained throughout employment.
